This Mixtape Life: TV on the Radio (4-22-11)

Entertainment Podcast
Recorded by Nathan Mattise

I record a weekly podcast for TheNextGreatGeneration.com because one of the multimedia editors there is a Newhouse colleague. They need a new place for me to host the audio file because my laptop is in the shop, thus the return of Trivial Podcasts.

The show is simple: Each week (like Ira Glass) I choose a theme, but bring songs instead of stories on that theme. In light of recent tragedy involving TV on the Radio bassist Gerard Smith, a show honoring both him and the band seemed right.

Podcast available to stream below, playlist of all songs on the podcast after the jump, posting old episodes of This Mixtape Life here coming soon.

Kids gifts that will keep them (and you) cool.

Sports & Leisure Essay
Written by Nathan Mattise

I’ve been trying to steer my youngest sister towards the current and creative since she was born. For every Miley Cyrus or other Disney queen tune she’d like we’d slip Phantogram in there just the same.  Her easy bake oven escapades had to be filmed with The Flaming Lips as a soundtrack, her holiday cards are made as if she was an amateur typographer.  You can imagine there’s a lot of pressure to gift well when the occasion arises. No simple Barbie will do.

With sis’s BDay on the horizon, here are five children’s gifts I found while on the hunt. They’re all guaranteed to help the young one in your life stay edgy while making sure you stay cool to the ones who matter most.

CNY’s Greatest Athletic Competition

Geography and Sports & Leisure Essay
Video and captions by Nathan Mattise

There were a lot of online entities looking for submissions lately – 48Hr Magazine or Tokyo Police Club for instance. Luckily, cameras were rolling when a three-man team and their coach from Syracuse went west to tackle CNY’s greatest athletic challenge… the Garbage Plate Run.

(Yep, it involves those garbage plates).

No recent posts does not equate to no recent work

Science & Nature Post
Written by Nathan Mattise

Between planning for Europe and working through the kinks of a domain redesign (anyone with Firefox links/table adapability knowledge?),  I haven’t been good at keeping up with the blogging here (or at Diners Without Frosted Tips for that matter).

Consider this a promise that when my days are filled with 9-to-5’s instead of the Underground and sightseeing, that will change for the better. Until then, check out the newest diner review, see the site redesign process and read on for occassional Twitter updates.

Yacht can rock off your well-choosen socks.

Oddly enough, fashion posts on In Pursuit of the Trivial have done exceptionally well (three of them fall in our Top Ten Overall Viewed Pages). Combine that with fashion coverage for Spring ’10 featuring Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks,  and it’s time to strike while the iron is hot.

Check out the footage below from a recent Yacht concert held at Hamilton College (Yacht comes through CNY again – Buffalo –  in early March by the way) and enjoy some advice for concert-goer attire set to “Psychic City.”

“Eyelid Movies” is out

Entertainment Trivial Links
Written by Nathan Mattise

Tuesday, February 9, 2010 was a big day. Sure, there were free Grand Slams from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.. The release of “Eyelid Movies” from Saratoga Springs duo Phantogram was (dare I say)… ever tastier?

We’ve been avid Phantogram supporters since our first time back in Geneva, N.Y. – even getting the chance to interview them, have them sign a styrofoam sword and writing the official Wiki entry. It’s no surprise at all “Eyelid Movies” is an In Pursuit of the Trivial favorite already in light of all that, but check out all the positive reviews flowing in from these outlets below:

SPIN

BBC

KEXP.com

AfterEllen.com

NPR

As a good friend of the band has said, the unique thing about Phantogram is that once you hear them you can’t help pushing the sound upon all your friends.  We’re just doing our part. You can check out the tribute video above from a recent Phantogram gig for starters.

WFOEOTYL #1: Nine Music Sets of ’09

Entertainment Column
Written by Nathan Mattise

It’s tough to come up with a fresh take on year-end music lists. Top Albums gets done by everyone under the sun and the same can be said for Top Songs (we’ve done it before, we’ll likely do it again). I’m in the fortunate position of limited real responsibilities and enough discretionary income to make at least 1-2 shows per month. Central New York might not be a hotbed, but if you expand your territory by a few hours in each direction it’s possible to make a concert calendar that includes many of the must-see acts in a given year. Hence…why not a top individual sets of ’09 recap?

Maybe this list won’t be showing up on hip blogs (i.e. largehearted boy or Fimoculous) but it’s mandatory for any aspiring music/culture writer to offer their take on things. As a quick reminder, I’ve reviewed music in Albuquerque, Stroudsburg and Syracuse and throughout college. While it’s not quite SPIN Magazine, I do listen to/see a lot of music.
